CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Duke Energy has a new logo following its merger with Progress Energy and will change the name of its Progress units next year.

Duke subsidiary Progress Energy Carolinas, which serves Eastern North Carolina, the Asheville area and parts of South Carolina, will become Duke Energy Progress next April. Progress Energy Florida will take the Duke Energy name.

The logo changes from an aggressive red D shape to softer blues and greens symbolizing commitment to sustainability, technology and energy efficiency, the company said in a statement. It will go into use in early 2013.

Developed internally, the logo borrows the star design of Progress logo and adds the swoosh from Duke s D, representing energy for the future, said chief communications officer Ginny Mackin.

The logo will appear on company signs, vehicles and in March 2013 in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky and in areas of the Carolinas including Charlotte that Duke served before the merger. It will appear in Florida and parts of the Carolinas served by Progress the following month.
