KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- A 23-year-old man was airlifted from Crowders Mountain State Park Tuesday after falling from a rock climbing area.

It happened at about 2 p.m. Tuesday near Backside Trail close to the Linwood Road access area.

Gaston County officials said the man appeared to have serious injuries, but he was alert and conscious when he was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center.

Officials said the man was climbing adjacent to the practice wall area when he fell 12 feet and then tumbled another 150 feet down the mountain.

Someone in the area used a cell phone to call 911.

Rescuers with the Gastonia Fire Department, Crowders Mountain Fire and Rescue and Gaston Emergency Medical Services had to climb about 800 feet of terrain to get to the man.
