CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- They are swimming lap after lap after lap, hoping to send a strong message to two fellow athletes injured in the Boston Marathon bombings.

Throughout the day Wednesday, swimmers and coaches at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center will raise money for Nicole and Michael Gross, who are still rehabilitating and recovering from the bombings.

With the help of Partners for Parks, MCAC is offering free coached swim sessions and asking for a donation in return.

All of the money raised will go to the Gross family for their medical expenses and recovery costs.

They are great people and we love them and we re here to support them, said MCAC director Matt Jakubowski, who coordinated the effort.

Jakubowski was thrilled with the initial turnout. By six in the morning, the MCAC pool was filled with swimmers and friends supporting the Gross family.

David Wensil and his triathlete group held signs and swam in support of Nicole and Michael.

Wensil was emotional when he talked about the triathlete community and the ties they all feel for Nicole who trained with many of them.

If you d like to show your support, the coached sessions are offered throughout the day today.

Hours are 12 p.m.-1 p.m., 3 p.m.-4 p.m., 4 p.m.-5 p.m., and 8 p.m.-9 p.m.
