UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- A woman fighting to clear her name had her wish granted Monday afternoon. The Union County District Attorney's Office dropped embezzlement charges against Kim Blount.

My father, stepfather and my husband are all veterans, said Blount, who was accused of stealing from the Indian Trail chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars, where she worked for 14 years. Every dime, every penny our auxiliary got, we always helped our veterans with it.

In March 2009, Blount was arrested and accused of embezzling money from the chapter. The dismissal comes as a huge relief, allowing Blount to express the belief her friends have shown for so long.

Justice is finally served, and I've been waiting a long time for it, she said.

It has been a painful 14 months for Blount. Not only was her reputation destroyed, she was grieving over the loss of her 28-year-old daughter, who was killed in a traffic accident.

Those who had an issue within the VFW wanted to maximize pain and suffering to her, said Carol Huffman Kendrick, Blount's attorney.

More than 30 women quit the post because of the controversy, including Dee Roeckle.

Every woman who took part in the auxiliary knew Kim was the most honest person there was. That's why we voted her in every year, Roeckle said.

Blount was arrested on a probable cause warrant, which requires a low standard of proof. After investigators continued looking at the case, they found that every dime was accounted for.

We had receipts where the money was spent and the people saying it shouldn't be spent -- names were on it. They had signed off and approved the expenditures, said Union County District Attorney John Snyder.

My mother never raised a thief or a liar and I've never stole a penny in my life, said Blount.

Her attorney is passing out blame for the arrest, but Huffman Kendrick does not fault the Union County Sheriff's Department. She said the charges were ultimately dropped because deputies kept investigating.
