DALLAS, N.C. (AP) -- A woman leading volunteers in a search for a pregnant dog who escaped while being taken to a shelter in Gaston County says she's not out of options but is getting frustrated after searching for three weeks.

The Gaston Gazette reported ( ) the 3-year-old beagle named Mabel was being taken from Lancaster County, S.C., to the shelter in Gaston County when she escaped from the car during a stop in Dallas, N.C.

Kirby Gross is the founder of The Lost Dog Project in Savannah, Ga. She's leading volunteers who are searching for Mabel, who likely has given birth by now.

Volunteers have posted fliers, knocked on doors and started a Facebook page for Mabel.
