CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Mecklenburg Police are investigating a fatal accident on Eastway Drive, which occurred around 3 o'clock Friday morning.

Investigators say that 28-year-old Thomas Lyall was pronounced on the scene. He was the driver. The passenger, 32-year-old Joseph Kizina, was only slightly hurt.

Police say that Lyall was heading north on Eastway when he hit a big patch of ice near Kilborne Drive.

His Jeep Wrangler slid and he hit a power pole on the driver s side door.

Investigators say alcohol and weather were factors in the accident.

The roads were so slippery that at one point officers had to push one of the responding Medic Units out of the ice.

Officers believe Lyall was traveling too fast for conditions. The speed limit on Eastway is 45, but police say when there is ice you need to travel a lot slower than that.

The power pole was snapped in 3 places, fortunately only one business lost power. Repair crews believe it will take them till 3 p.m. Friday afternoon to fix the damage.

Until then the road will be blocked off.
