CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Eighty-seven percent of Charlotte-area residents plan to take a beach vacation this year, according to a survey done by Trip Advisor. Before you tip your toes in the water, check out the Natural Resources Defense Council's 24th annual beach report.

Nearly 3,500 water quality samples were collected from beaches across the country including the Great Lakes.

The three beaches in North Carolina with percent of samples exceeding the national Beach Action Value (BAV) safety threshold include:

1. Waterway Park in Oak Island (40%)
2. Swan Quarter Bay on the Pamlico Sound across from Hatteras (38%)
3. Dutchman Creek Park near Southport (35%)

The three beaches in North Carolina with percent of samples exceeding the national Beach Action Value (BAV) safety threshold include:

1. Briarcliff Acres Beach between myrtle beach and north myrtle in Horry County (45%)
2. Horry County Beaches South Carolina Campgrounds (32%)
3. Myrtle Beach (23%)

There were 35 superstar beaches across the country. Five are in the Carolinas including Tybee Island and Ocean Pier at Topsail Beach.
