MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Matthews Police and the FBI are investigating a Thursday afternoon bank robbery.

Matthews Police say the SunTrust Bank branch in the 300 block of West John Street was robbed just before 4 p.m. Thursday.

The suspect produced a black handgun during the robbery, police say. He fled the scene on foot towards Irwin Lane and Main Street.

The suspect is described as a black male wearing a dark gray Champion-brand hoodie with an orange vest over it, blue jeans, white Nike sneakers with a black swoosh , dark sunglasses and a black mask.

Police did not comment on how much money was taken.
