GASTONIA, N.C. -- A jury in Gaston County Monday heard Danny Hembree tell police the chilling details of how he said he murdered two women in October of 2009.
The confession was taped by police in December of 2009.
On the tape, Hembree can be heard telling investigators that he killed 17-year-old Heather Catterton of Gaston County first, and then a few weeks later he says he also killed Randi Saldana.
Hembree said both women were killed at the home where he was living with his mother in Gaston County.
Killed them at my mama's. I killed Heather downstairs in the laundry room and I killed Randi in my den, he said on tape.
After killing Catterton by suffocating her with a plastic bag, investigators will try to prove he dumped her body in a remote area of York County in South Carolina.
Hembree told police during the confession that he later recanted that his mother was home the night he bought Saldana to the home and killed her.
Mama was in there reading, added Hembree. She thought I was going to give her some crack but I didn't. I just killed her.
Even though Hembree later took back the confession, he had already led police to his mother's house and pointed out where they could find blood and other evidence.
Crime scene technicians are expected to testify about what was found in the mother's house.
Asked why he did it, Hembree said he felt both women were prostituting themselves for drugs.
I killed Heather because, I don't know. I just did. Just wanted to, he said.
