WAXHAW, N.C. Michael Brandon Gordon was found guilty Tuesday of involuntary manslaughter after his pit bulls attacked and killed a 5-year-old girl last year.

The incident took place on January 12, 2011 in Mikayla Woodard s grandmother s yard just off Rehobeth Road in Waxhaw. The dogs jumped a fence and bit the 5-year-old in the neck. According to Makayla s family, the dogs bit the young girl more than 200 times.

The two dogs were owned by Gordon, who was sentenced to 20 to 24 months in prison on Tuesday. Gordon entered a guilty plea during the middle of his trial's jury selection last week.

Investigators said Gordon was more worried about his pit bull than the little girl when it happened.

Woodard's family received a $20,000 wrongful death settlement in court this past February.

Neighbors had complained many times about the two dogs roaming free and believed the tragedy could have been avoided. Woodard's grandmother was injured in the incident as well.

The loss of Makayla Woodard is an unspeakable tragedy, and it is my hope that this case can be a reminder to our community to act responsibly and not act in a manner which puts our neighbors in danger, said District Attorney Trey Robison.
