The government is working to figure out if software companies that manufacture apps are quietly collecting your personal data.

According to a report by the Federal Trade Commission, some apps violate the privacy rights of children, and may be getting information from them without a parent's consent.

The FTC examined 400 apps, and found most failed to inform parents about the types of data the app could get, and who could access it.

The FTC didn't say which companies are under investigation.
