RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A McDowell County commissioner is the newest member of the North Carolina House.

Gov. Pat McCrory appointed Josh Dobson on Tuesday to fill the two-year term of fellow Republican Mitch Gillespie, who resigned his seat after 14 years in the chamber to become an assistant secretary in the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

State law obligated McCrory to name Dobson after Republicans in Avery, McDowell and Mitchell counties chose him Monday evening to succeed Gillespie.

Dobson is expected to be seated when the General Assembly reconvenes on Wednesday.
