CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- North Carolina Sen. Dan Clodfelter said Monday he is considering a run for Charlotte mayor this fall.

The eight-term Democratic state senator had said last month he was considering a return to the Charlotte city council, where he served from 1987 to 1993. With Mayor Anthony Foxx s announcement last week that he would not seek re-election, Clodfelter said he s been approached by a number of people about a mayoral bid.

I m giving it some consideration, he said. It really would be unfair for me to tell you how strong. I really just started thinking about it.

Clodfelter s name has regularly been floated as a mayoral possibility. He joins a number of other Charlotte political figures who have said they re considering a bid, including Democratic city councilmen Patrick Cannon, David Howard and James Mitchell, as well as Democratic state Sen. Malcolm Graham.

Former Republican city councilman Edwin Peacock formally announced his candidacy last week.
