STATESVILLE, N.C. -- A serious accident blocked part I-40 near Statesville Thursday morning.
The accident happened around 7 a.m. in the eastbound lanes on I-40 near Sharon School Road exit.
Troopers from the North Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver of a 16-passenger van fell asleep at the wheel, ran off the road, hit a guard rail and flipped.
Four people were injured during the accident. One person was ejected through the side window of the vehicle. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center.
The driver and front passenger suffered minor injuries. The fourth victim was taken to Iredell Memorial Hospital.
Troopers were able to open the outside of the lanes around 8:30 a.m. The inside lane of I-40 east is still closed while crews work to fix the guard rail.
