UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- Firearms and ammo has gun advocates flocking to Union County this weekend.

Gander Mountain opened its firearms superstore -- the largest in North Carolina. In a time of heated gun control debate, customers say it s needed.

I like deer hunting and fishing and check out the guns, there's some nice guns here, says Indian Trail resident, Wesley Brian.

You won't get a better selection then right here, which is one reason gun enthusiasts came out as soon as the doors opened at the new Gander Mountain Firearms Superstore.

It's been phenomenal, the customers in Monroe have been packed in here since this morning, said employee Mitch Nelson.

Not only are locals excited about the location.

When I did want to go and look at guns I'd have to go all the way to Concord or into Charlotte and this is four or five miles from my house so it's very convenient, said Indian Trail resident, Marvin Bailey.

But also the supply, something they say has been hard to find.

Shelves are empty, said Bailey.

Nelson says since the gun control debate has heated up, people have bought up ammo and many smaller stores aren't getting frequent shipments to restock.

People have been afraid they won't be able to get ammunition for their firearms so they start to panic a little bit, said Nelson.

Not a problem here with thousands of rounds to choose from and 1,500 to1,600 different guns, but Nelson says they also take their responsibility of selling guns very seriously.

We're very meticulous in the way we check these people out, the way we do our background checks, said Nelson.

And gun enthusiasts say as long as people buying are using for recreation, there should be no problem.

People are going crazy, with a lot of people I think it's faddish and a lot of people are scared and want to get something before they think laws are going to change and all that, I think that's a bunch of nonsense, said Bailey.

For their grand opening they have the stars from the popular show Swamp People , as well as free giveaways and prizes all weekend.
