SAN ANTONIO -- After being on the run for years, one of the world's most powerful drug lords has been caught. Joaquin El Chapo Guzman was arrested at a Mexican beach resort.

KENS 5 spoke to Rep. Pete Gallego and he said the arrest is a significant blow to the international drug trade.

As a former prosecutor, I would tell you that this is not just one guy, said Gallego.

Multiple law enforcement agencies like the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security and Mexican authorities are credited for his arrest.

It shows Mexico and the United States are still cooperating on a high level. And frankly, cities on the American side of the border have suffered somewhat, said Gallego.

Even though one of the world's most powerful drug lords is taken down, Gallego believes more violence could arise to find his replacement.

But I will tell you in the long term, there has not been many people who can handle the job he did and the manner that he did, said Gallego.

Authorities in the U.S. said Guzman faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments. They were looking for him since 2001, when he escaped from a high-security federal prison in a laundry cart.
