CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Officers have arrested three suspects, who prompted a lockdown at four local schools, follwoing a Charlotte carjacking.

The investigation began around 3 a.m. Sunday in the 6400 block of Whitewater Drive. A man told police two suspects awoke him while sleeping in the back of his friend s gray Jeep Cherokee. Police say they took the victim s phone at gunpoint, and then fled in the vehicle.

Officers spotted the Jeep on Monday and attempted to stop the driver when he pulled into the Vance High School parking lot. The people inside of the Jeep jumped and ran from the vehicle, according the police.
The incident prompted a lockdown at Vance, as well as James Martin Middle School, Morehead Elementary and Nathaniel Alexander Elementary.

Police say the driver, identified as 18-year-old Tyquan Powell, dropped a handgun magazine while fleeing into a wooded area near the school.

Officers arrested the other people in the jeep after a quick chase. They ve been identified as 18-year-old Christopher Jones and 19-year-old Elijah Craig. They have been charged for resisting officers, and Jones is also charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

Police arrested Powell soon after in the 8100 block of Ikea Boulevard. Powell is accused of the same crimes as Craig, as well as robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
