YORK COUNTY, S.C. -- The York Police Department says a man struck a officer's patrol unit while attempting to flee the scene of an armed robbery.

Friday morning around 5:45, officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Auburn Drive for a reported armed robbery in progress. Dispatch gave the deputies a suspect description of three black males wearing masks and carrying handguns.

When officers approached the scene, they spotted a maroon vehicle attempting to leave the area with no headlights on. Officers say the driver was a black male with some sort of black garment on his head. The vehicle struck the patrol car in the driver-side door, hitting the officer behind the wheel, as the suspect attempted to flee the area, according to authorities.

One of the officers in the patrol car fired a shot at the vehicle, the incident report states, but the driver refused to stop.

Another officer was able to pull the vehicle over, and the driver was identified as Rodney Lamar Howell, 30, of Hickory Grove.

A search of the area did not turn up additional suspects, but officers were able to find tracks that indicated the remaining suspects fled on Rosewood Drive by vehicle.

Meanwhile, officers at the scene of the reported armed robbery were able to confirm a burglary and robbery had occurred in the 300 block of Auburn Drive.

Howell is charged with attempted murder, robbery and burglary/breaking and entering.

Police did not comment on the officer's injuries.
