CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte's 911 center is going high tech.

This week, the nation's largest cell phone companies signed on to provide text message service to 911.

Seventy-five percent of the 1,000,000 calls that come into CMPD s communication center every year are made, using cell phones.

The public's reliance on mobile devices is one reason why by the end of the year, getting emergency help will be just a text message away.

CMPD already has the equipment in place. It s the same technology currently used by the hearing impaired. Since your mobile phone also has a built in SMS, or short message texting feature, all that was required was an agreement to provide 911 to text by the four major mobile carriers.

Texting would help in scenarios where the caller's safety is compromised, like a break-in or a domestic violence situation.

The task remaining here is setting policies and procedures

in place and training dispatchers to handle the influx of texts that will surely come their way.
