TEGA CAY, S.C. -- An 8-year-old boy is dead after a freak accident on Lake Wylie Saturday afternoon.

Tanner Blake Goshen died when he fell out of the boat he was in and was hit by the propeller of the boat s inboard motor.

The boy s father, Phil Goshen, told NewsChannel 36 that Blake had been boating with family members, who were tubing in the Torrance Branch of Tega Cay near Windjammer Park.

Rob McCullough of the SC Dept. of Natural Resources said the boaters had a problem with their tow rope and had stopped the boat s engine to fix it.

Somehow, the engine engaged, throwing Blake overboard. Blake s father said he performed CPR on his son, but Blake died at the scene.

York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said Blake died of extreme blood loss.

Sgt. Todd Campbell of the SC DNR said officers are still investigating how the engine became engaged.

Bystanders expressed their condolences for the family Saturday afternoon at Windjammer Park.

Damon Spears, who was cooking for a family gathering at the park, said he arrived right after the accident and knew something was wrong.

When we were coming in here to the park we saw ambulances.I saw the fire department, police, water rescue, and everything, said Spears. I knew something bad had gone wrong.

He could see Blake s parents sitting on the shore, reeling from the loss of their son.

I can't even imagine what the parents are going through right now.My prayers go out to them, said Spears. Anytime it s a child, it's just devastating.

Phil Goshen said Blake was a student at River Gate Elementary School in the Steele Creek area of Charlotte, and just participated in his first year of flag football.

A picture of the youngster shows him clutching a football and smiling.Goshen calls Blake a loving child.

He will call the school s principal Monday so that Blake s classmates can be informed about his death.
