HICKORY, N.C. -- Hickory officials say lanes of U.S. 70 near Valley Hills Mall will remain closed until next week as crews work to repair a 12-feet wide sinkhole.

The sinkhole opened up Thursday afternoon in front of Judge's BBQ Express. Officials say a storm drain junction box collapsed, causing the sinkhole.

Only one westbound lane of the highway is open between Chili's and Colonial Lanes Bowling Alley.

Motorists traveling in the area are urged to use caution.

Contractors will work through the weekend to repair drains and pipes. The road will not fully reopen until paving is complete.
