CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Loomis Fargo employee was shot and seriously injured during an attempted robbery in a SouthPark shopping center Monday morning.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Ladena Duncan was shot while servicing a Wells Fargo ATM at the Foxcroft Shopping Center off of Fairview Road around 9 a.m.

According to police, one of two employees in the Loomis Fargo truck got out of the vehicle to work on an ATM. The employee was approached moments later by a man who shot her during an alleged robbery attempt.

NewsChannel 36 spoke with one woman was about to use the ATM moments before the shooting happened.

The woman, who did not want her identify known, said that she wanted to take out cash for her daughter s field trip, but as she pulled up to the ATM the woman Loomis worker asked her to wait.

She waved to me and said it will be 15 minutes. So I was pulling out to leave and I heard a shot and saw whoever shot her running.

Police said Duncan got back in the truck and her co-worker called 911 and tried to drive to Carolinas Medical Center but was instructed by a 911 operator to stop at Cavendish Court and Providence Road so the victim could receive immediate medical attention from EMTs.

Duncan suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and is in serious condition at CMC, according to police.

An alert sent by police to residents in the area told them the suspect was described as a black male wearing a grey sweatsuit. He was last seen running toward the Camden Fairington Apartments, off Valencia Terrace. A K-9 was used but Lt. Fred Newell said the dog lost trace of the shooter, meaning that the shooter who ran away may have had help.

There are several business and apartment complexes, so more than likely they had a vehicle waiting to leave the scene, said Lt. Newell

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call 911.

This attempted robbery and shooting happened in the same area where Robert Barber, 64, was shot to death last April at Foxcroft East neighborhood off Carmel Road.
