CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Democratic National Convention Committee will nominate Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as chairman of the 2012 National Convention.

The DNCC is expected to make a formal announcement Wednesday afternoon.

Mayor Villaraigosa has dedicated his career to civic engagement and empowering people at the grassroots, said DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz. And that s exactly what we need to be successful at this convention, input and engagement from Americans across the country.

Villariagosa is currently serving in his second term as Mayor of Los Angeles, and also serves as President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

A native of East Los Angeles, Villaraigosa has served as speaker of the California State Assembly and as an L.A. city councilman. He was elected mayor in 2005 and re-elected in 2009.
