FORTMILL, S.C. -- The York County Sheriff s Office has made an arrest in an attempted armed robbery outside of a McDonald s early Monday morning.

Authorities say the victim is an employee of the McDonald s in the 3400 block of the Highway 21 Bypass in Fort Mill, and was waiting outside after his shift when he was approached by Roger Steven Smith.

The victim was lying on the sidewalk with his hat over his eyes, but sat up when he heard approaching footsteps. The victim reported that Smith asked how to get to Interstate 85, and when the victim pointed, the Smith hit the victim in the head and face with what the victim believed to be channel locks.

Smith then grabbed the victim by the shirt and said come with me and led him around the back of the business toward the entrance on Springhill Farm Road, meanwhile asking the victim to hand over any credit cards or cash.

The victim told Smith he didn t have anything on him.

Then, Smith told the victim to lie on the ground and to not look at him, or he would be killed, according to the Sheriff's Office. That s when, authorities say,Smith climbed into the passenger side of a silver Dodge Durango and fled toward I-77.

The victim was taken to CMC Pineville for treatment of his injuries.

Smith is charged with kidnapping and strong armed robbery.
