ANSON COUNTY, N.C. The office of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is assisting after a large quantity of old dynamite was discovered in a farm barn Friday.
Sheriff: Explosives found in barn, 'not uncommon'
Sheriff Tommy Allen tells NBC Charlotte the discovery was man in the southern part of Anson County on Long Pine Church Road. Officials said the report about the explosives was made earlier this week and removal was scheduled Friday morning.
Authorities will remove old dynamite and blasting caps from the barn. According to investigators, the property owner is fully cooperating.
In a press release sent to NBC Charlotte, authorities said 30-40 years ago is was not unusual for farmers to use dynamite to remove tree stumps in fields and store the dynamite in their barns.
Sheriff Allen said he had seen this happen multiple times over the years, and this situation is no different.
The removal is expected to wrap up by Friday afternoon.
