CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Smoky skies blanketed the Charlotte area Friday evening, prompting curiosity from residents.

The Charlotte Fire Department conducted controlled burns on Thursday and Friday on Morrow Mountain.

Thursday s burn covered 600 acres, and Friday s spread across 450 acres.

Smoke and the stench of a burn spread through much of the area. Fire officials say the conditions may persist through Saturday.
