CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student landed in the national spotlight and got a special visit from Google.

Hailey Kim was celebrated Tuesday at Providence Spring Elementary school.

Her Google doodle is one of 50 finalists in the company's annual competition, and all her classmates wore t-shirts with her drawing.

This year's doodle theme was something that could better the world .

You needed to draw an invention that would make the world a better place to be, so I drew a space-traveling tunnel that would go across the world very fast, Hailey said.

Hailey says her idea came from traveling every year to Korea to see family, and not liking the long flight.

Everyone across the country can vote for their favorite doodle from the 50 state winners. Voting will be open from April 29 to May 9 on this site, and the public vote will determine the five national finalists, with one from each grade group.

Google will announce these five national finalists and one of them as the national winner on May 21. Both the winner and the winner s school will get a cash prize.
