CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It is a story of before and after focused on helping children learn.

It is extremely busy in here, said Richard Green, a District Facilities Manager for Target Stores.

NewsChannel 36 talked to Green as 100 volunteers from Target finished making over the Media Center Friday morning at Shamrock Gardens Elementary School near Plaza Midwood.

We put in bright colors, new carpeting, flat screens, computers and the whole 9 yards, Green added.

In partnership with The Heart of America Foundation, Green and other volunteers watched as hundreds of students filled the Library, cheering for what they saw.

Just the look on their faces. It is worth every minute, every minute, Green said.

Part of the Target School Library Makeover program, Shamrock Gardens becomes the second CMS campus to get the remodel.

The hope is to make the library more inviting and to inspire the students here to pick up one of the 2000 new books and read.

You re the very important people here today. Every single one of us in the room is here for you today because we believe in you. We know you can do great things when you read, Angie Halamandaris, Co-Founder and President of The Heart of America Foundation told the students.

Shamrock Gardens is a great story within CMS. It is a Title 1 school where a majority of students are on free or reduced lunch. Parents and staff will tell you it is making great strides in student achievement.

There is a partial magnet program in Learning Immersion and Talent Development. And parental involvement from the surrounding neighborhoods like Plaza Midwood is on the rise.

As she looked around at the finished product, School Library Media Specialist Margaret Hollar couldn t help but hope the students learned an important lesson.

One of the things I really like about today is the number of Target people that are here. And I want the kids in this school to see that you don t just get from your community, you give back to your community and that is the way it has got to work, she said.

In addition to the library renovation, Shamrock Gardens Elementary also received a new food pantry from target. It ll be a place where students and their families can get staple foods and fresh produce to take home.
