CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Good Samaritan is recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg after she stopped to help a woman who was being assaulted.

It happened Wednesday morning on W. Sugar Creek Road and Glory Street.

Police say Deandre Tavius White who shot the Good Samaritan stopped in the middle of the road, got out of the car and was beating the female passenger when the woman, who was in a different car, stopped to help.

Police say that's when White pulled a gun from his waistband and shot the woman as she backed away. Construction workers in the area say they heard three gunshots.

White,18, and his passenger got back into the black Honda Accord he was driving, but it didn't end there.

Somehow the woman being assaulted got out of the car, but White kept going, which prompted a short pursuit by CMPD.

White ran into a truck at the intersection of Hickory Grove Road and W.T. Harris Boulevard.

A local pizza delivery driver was in his car at the same intersection and witnessed the crash.

I saw him do a 180 and he hit the truck right there and he jumped out of the car, took his jacket off and just kept running, said the delivery driver who does not want to be identified. I thought maybe he didn't have insurance on the car and was trying to not get in trouble or something.

Police caught White in a Kangaroo Express parking lot across the street. They took him to the hospital due to injuries from the wreck.

The delivery driver says he too would have stopped if he came across the same situation. But getting shot, like the Good Samaritan who stopped to help did, now has him thinking twice and says, that's just plain sad.

It's unfortunate, I would have come out and helped too if I was there, but you get in trouble, it looks like, it's hard.

Back on West Sugar Creek, Gray says he likely would have stopped to help too - and it's too bad when people trying to do the right thing meet someone out to do wrong.

The woman shot in the leg is expected to be OK.

White has been charged with with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a female and possession of a stolen firearm. He also faces charges related to the police chase.
