WILLISTON, S.C. (AP) -- Federal officials are ordering a Barnwell County rescue squad to pay back $800,000 in false Medicare claims.

The U.S. Justice Department said Monday that the Williston Rescue Squad agreed to the fine.

Federal officials say the rescue squad billed Medicare for non-emergency ambulance rides for patients who were not confined to their beds or who did not have medical conditions that required transportation in an ambulance.

Authorities say the rescue squad then created false documents to hide the improper billing.

The Justice Department says the clinical social worker who reported the false Medicare claims will get $160,000 as a reward for being a whistleblower.
