YORK, S.C. -- A male student accused of slapping a female student in York last week told officers he got the idea from a YouTube video.

On Friday, the school resource officer at York Middle School reports a male student slapped a female student across the face, causing the victim to have a busted lip.

The 12-year-old suspect admitted to slapping his peer, according to the police report, then continued to tell the SRO that he hadn't meant to hurt the girl, and was inspired by Smack Cam videos he'd seen on YouTube.

The victim's mother decided to press charges on the boy; he is charged with assault and third-degree battery.

There is no recording of the alleged assault.

We've included an example of the referenced Smack Cam YouTube videos below.
