HICKORY, N.C. -- All lanes of U.S. 70 in Hickory were reopened Monday evening after contractors made a temporary fix to a broken storm drain box that led to a 12-foot wide sinkhole last week.

Hickory officials said contractors worked through the weekend to stabilize the hole and repair the damaged infrastructure.

However, officials said, the storm drain underneath the road is damaged and the state Department of Transportation will have to install a new pipe.

When work begins on the new pipe, the road will temporarily close again.
