CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating two similar robberies in east Charlotte Saturday morning -- one in the parking lot of a Catholic church.

The two robberies happened less than an hour and a half apart, according to police reports.

In the first, Luisa Perez said she was walking to her car in the Lamplighter Mobile Home Park off Albemarle Road when a man in a red Mustang approached.

He tried to give her a business card, said Perez s husband, Geredo Medina. Then the man grabbed Perez s purse.

She tried to pull away, and the man he pulled a gun and put the gun like that, said Perez, pointing his fingers towards his wife like a gun.

A police report said the man got away with Perez s purse, which held two cell phones and more than $100. Medina was working in Raleigh when he got a call from his wife about the robbery.

She s crying, and I m nervous and shaking bad, he said.

About an hour and a half later, another woman was sitting in the parking lot at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church on Shamrock Drive, waiting for her son to come out of religion classes.

Her two young children -- a 4-year-old and an infant -- were in the car with her.

A man in a red Mustang backed into the space next to her and got out of his car, said church deacon David Reiser. Reiser said the man knocked on the woman's window and showed her a business card.

When the woman rolled down her window, the man pulled out a gun and robbed her, said Reiser.

Reiser said clergy warned the congregation Sunday about a crime in the area, without being specific.

He told us when we re outside here in the church, especially at night, we have to be with somebody else and not alone, said church member Hillary Martinez. There are people out there who are just dangerous, and would do anything to get money.

Both victims were Hispanic women. Both said the Mustang was a 1990's-era model.

Police don t have a more specific description of the suspect, and haven't made any arrests as of Sunday evening.
