Here's what you can learn from the the law and the landscape in Charlotte.
1. North Carolina law treats bikes and cars as equal, which means bikes can be on nearly any road. Slow moving vehicles are supposed to be as far to the right as possible.
2. Cyclists are allowed to ride on the sidewalk nearly everywhere in Charlotte, except in certain parts of uptown. But many don't do it because, you know, there are people on the sidewalks.
3. So, why can't cyclists just stick to bike lanes? Charlotte is always adding more, but there are only a few dozen miles of them so far, and they can end quickly, putting riders back into traffic.
