YORK, S.C. -- South Carolina s State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is conducting a use of force investigation into York Police Chief Andy Robinson.

The city requested SLED s involvement. Had the incident involved any other York officer, administrators say the matter would be reviewed according to the department s policies. There isn t currently a policy in place regarding use of force protocol and York s chief of police.

The city says the best way to avoid interference in any way is to allow SLED, and impartial entity, to take the case.

Details are limited. Earlier this week, SLED confirmed they re addressing the matter but declined to comment, based on this being an ongoing investigation. York administrators say they have only offered this confirmation to prevent distortion of any facts. The nature of the original incident hasn t been released.

Chief Robinson won the Strom Thurmond Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement in 2013. He s worked for several other agencies including the Rock Hill Police Department and York County Sheriff s Office.
