CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mecklenburg County's unemployment rate dropped to 8.7 percent in October, another sign the Charlotte job market is improving.

The figure is an improvement from the 9.1 percent rate in September. In October 2011, the Mecklenburg County unemployment figure was 10.4 percent.

Out of a labor force of about 500,00 people in the county, 43,371 were unemployed last month, according to the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Unemployment was down in 76 of North Carolina's 100 counties last month, with the state average at 8.8 percent. Compared to last year's figures, 98 counties saw a decrease in unemployment.

Currituck County has the lowest unemployment rate in North Carolina at 5.5 percent, while in Scotland County 15.7 percent of residents are out of work.
