CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. -- A school in Cabarrus County was briefly placed on lockdown Wednesday morning after a hunter was spotted nearby.

Bethel Elementary School was briefly placed on lockdown after a man was spotted in camouflage with a gun in the area of the school, according to authorities.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office said the man in question was a local resident who hunts and was seen by a passer-by in the vicinity of the school.

Authorities said the man was not on school property. Deputies spoke with the man and quickly learned he did not pose any threat to the students and faculty at Bethel.

The incident was cleared by authorities and the school was lifted off lockdown around 9:30 a.m.
