CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Former S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford plans to run for his former congressional seat, CNN reported late Thursday.

Sanford intends to run for the Republican nomination in South Carolina s 1st Congressional District, according to the CNN report. The former governor held the post almost a decade ago.

On Monday, S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley selected the district s current congressman, Tim Scott, to fill Jim DeMint s soon-to-be-vacated seat as senator.

Sanford had reportedly earlier expressed interest in running for DeMint s Senate seat.

Sanford, once a rising star in the Republican Party, disappeared for five days in summer 2009 and returned to publicly confess an affair with an Argentine woman.

Staffers initially said the married Republican governor was walking the Appalachian Trial.
