HICKORY, N.C. -- The case of a Catawba County man accused of shooting his roommate to death and mutilating his body has been delayed until October.
The Hickory Daily Record reported that 19-year-old Michael Anderson had a hearing scheduled Tuesday in Superior Court, but it was postponed until Oct. 3.
Anderson is charged in the death of 36-year-old Stephen Starr of Mountain View, who died Feb. 14 of multiple gunshot wounds.
An autopsy shows that after Starr was killed, his body was mutilated and the word JOKER was carved on his chest and abdomen.
Words also were written in ball point pen on his abdomen.
Anderson has been held without bond since the death.
He reported the death to 911, saying he had overdosed on an over-the-counter cold medicine.
Investigators say Starr's death was gruesome. An autopsy report from the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said one of Starr's arms was nearly severed.
Part of his left ear was cut off.
He also had 17 stab wounds.
Investigators removed several weapons from Starr's home, including a Remington shotgun and a Colt .45-caliber pistol, according to a search warrant in the case.
They also seized a black-handled knife from Starr's bedroom with the blade still underneath Starr, and an ax, which was lodged in Starr's body.
Investigators say Anderson called police and admitted he had killed Starr. Anderson blamed it on an overdose of cold medicine.
He told the 911 operator, I did some things to his body that you don't want them to see. You're not going to know who it is.
