WADESBORO, N.C. -- Construction to repair the large sinkhole that developed off of U.S. 74 last month is under way, according to Wadesboro Police Chief Janie Schutz, who added that she expects the hole will be repaired within four weeks.

A representative for property owner Claude Smith is hopeful that repairs will be completed sooner, possibly in the next two weeks.

The sinkhole opened up on July 28 after heavy storms rolled through the area. Originally, the hole was about 20 feet deep, but expanded after more rain hit the area on August 10.

Chief Schutz said she doesn't think there should be any concern for similar sinkholes opening because the problem was likely caused by a flooded pipe.

The sinkhole continues to block access to the McDonald s, Pizza Hut and Harvest Ministries.
