CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It's hard to believe, but crooks may be posing as Salvation Army volunteers in order to rip people off.

The charitable group released a warning on Wednesday that you should be on the lookout for bell-ringer impersonators .

Here's a few tips to make sure you're donating to the real charity:

  • All Salvation Army bell-ringers wear red aprons with the organization's logo
  • The donation kettle is on a red stand with a lock
