CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A man is in custody after he led authorities on a chase that caused two wrecks when a golf cart in the back of his truck came loose Wednesday afternoon in north Charlotte.

The chase began in Iredell County after an officer ran a license plate check on a pickup and found that it was stolen, said Sgt. F.J. Hargro of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The truck sped off, traveling south on Interstate 77 before exiting on W.T. Harris Boulevard near Northlake Mall. Part of a golf cart in the bed of the truck came loose, Hargro said, causing a wreck near W.T. Harris Boulevard and Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road.

The suspect continued driving for about two miles when the remainder of the golf cart fell from the truck, Hargro said. The golf cart s seat flew through the windshield of a driver traveling in the opposite direction near the intersection of Mt. Holly-Huntersville and Beatties Ford roads.

The suspect continued driving after the second wreck, Hargro said, but got stuck in a muddy field about a mile away on Beatties Ford Road. He was soon apprehended.

The other two drivers were transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the suspect.
