CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A 20-year-old man died after the SUV he was driving crashed into a tree in a south Charlotte neighborhood Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred around 11:20 a.m. off of Lindstrom Drive near Carmel Road just south of Quail Hollow Country Club.

Charles Gardner Butterworth, 20, was driving a white 2000 Toyota 4 Runner that crashed into a tree near an intersection.

Butterworth, a Myers Park High School graduate and Eagle Scout, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a crew member of the Showtime series 'Homeland' according to the Homeland Casting Facebook page, which immediately offered condolences on Tuesday. Much of the series was filmed in the Charlotte area this past year.

Investigators say excessive speed may have contributed to the crash and police say he was not wearing a seat belt.

The speed limit in the area where Butterworth crashed is 25 miles per hour, and there is a speed bump about a block away from the accident scene.
