CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. -- County officials in Cabarrus County have declared a State of Emergency after an EF-2 tornado touched down early Saturday morning.

Officials estimated the cost of damage at nearly $2 million. The estimation includes 49 homes throughout the county.

At least four homes were completely destroyed, 14 homes have major damage.

NC Damage assessment teams will be in Cabarrus County on Monday to determine if the properties qualifies for state of federal assistance.

If eligible, any property owners under-insured will be notified of when and how to apply for assistance.

The American Red Cross will keep the emergency shelter at Hickory Ridge High School open over night for any tornado victims needing a place to eat or sleep.
