BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. (AP) -- A state trooper from Florence is the South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper of the Year for saving a life when he thought he was just going to be writing a ticket for running a red light.

Senior Trooper William McInville was honored Thursday for rescuing a choking 2-year-old while on patrol in June.

McInville says he saw a driver run a red light and nearly cause a wreck. When he stopped the car, a mother ran out holding her son and saying he wasn't breathing. McInville performed the Heimlich maneuver on the child and a piece of candy popped out.

The child recovered. Doctors say the boy would have likely suffered brain damage if his mother had kept driving to the hospital.
