RALEIGH, N.C. -- Some colorful commentary prompted the North Carolina Department of Transportation to offer sincere apologies for one of its IT contractors.

NCDOT said Wednesday that the contractor put out what it s calling six erroneous and inappropriate traffic alert messages on the traveler management system TIMS.

According to the Raleigh News & Observer, the incident happened late Wednesday afternoon following an alert for a crash on I-440. Unusual messages were sent via TIMS following the initial crash report. The paper says the comments included Women drivers, rain, Obamacare and Stay home.

The department says it hired the contractor less than six months ago. The offender was performing routine tests on the RSS and email feeds when the messages were sent. NCDOT says the employee did not turn off the external feed during testing.

The contractor has been fired.
