CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The iconic Jesus Saves sign that sits atop Cannon Cathedral was removed from the building Monday afternoon.

It's truly a landmark, Doris Glenn said Monday morning as she snapped a photo of the sign. Back in 1989, I was a member of the church when it was Cannon Cathedral.

Demolition was delayed for Cannon Cathedral as city leaders gave the owners more time to figure out a way to remove the sign.

The church, then known as Garr Memorial Church, was a landmark in the 1940s because of that sign. The area was largely farmland and the sign brought visibility.

When the Wesley Heights area began to decline, the Garr Memorial Church moved their congregation to their current home off Independence Boulevard in east Charlotte.

Those congregation members hope to reclaim the sign and refurbish it.
