ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina Attorney General is investigating a York County museum foundation after the organization reported a $6.5 million drop in assets.

The Secretary of State's office told the Herald of Rock Hill that it requested that state prosecutors step in after a 10-month investigation into the books at the Culture and Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit that supports York County's museums. Most of the decline in assets is listed as land, buildings and equipment.

Foundation chairman Bill Easley says the organization's accountant left the assets off the filing to avoid confusion and says it has nothing to do with the total amount of assets the foundation has.

A lawyer for the Secretary of State said she could not detail that office's concerns because the investigation is still open
