BOONE, N.C. -- While performing routine maintenance on fire hydrants, fire officials in Boone located a homemade explosive device.

Around 4:15 on Tuesday, personnel with the Boone Fire Department found a suspicious object near a fire hydrant on Lady Slipper Lane.

Boone Police, Boone Fire and the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad immediately responded to the scene.

The object was determined to be a homemade explosive device.

Officials rendered the device safe, and turned it over to the bomb squad for disposal.

An investigation into the device continues.
