FORT MILL, S.C. -- A Fort Mill high school student faces two felony charges involving exploitation of a minor for showing cell phone pictures and a secretly recorded video of him having sex with a female classmate.

It happened a couple weeks ago. The student, 17, showed pictures and videos of himself and the girl, also 17, engaged in sexual conduct. The pictures and video were shown to students during school hours at Fort Mill High School. Police said that when the girl found out about the photos and video, she went to school officials. A school resource officer went to police, who launched an investigation.

NBC Charlotte has chosen not to report on the identity of either the alleged victim, nor suspect because both are minors. On Monday, the juvenile turned himself in on three charges, including the two felonies. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of disturbing school and could face further discipline after he is done with his legal issues.

The school district allows students to bring cell phones on campus, but according to school district policy they are to be used strictly for school matters.

They are a learning tool. So with the permission of the principal or the teacher they can have them out, said Dr. Tommy Schmolze, Assistant Superintendent of Fort Mill Schools. Dr. Schmolze also urged parents to be vigilant in the battle to navigate ever-growing new technologies. Get involved with this. Don't put your head in the sand a recent survey up to 60 percent of all teens have been involved with sexting, he said.

The district said that it will provide counseling for the female student and any other students who might need to talk about the incident.

At the time of this writing the teen is in the York County Detention center. His bond has been set at $52,205.

His next court date is set for March 11, 2014.
